افتراضي سمك الباسا الفيتنامى " Basa, Vietnamese Catfish"

سمك الباسا الفيتنامى

Shark catfish may occasionally be falsely labelled as basa fish

انتشر بشكل ملحوظ فيليه سمك الباسا الفيتنامى ... ماهو اصله ؟؟؟؟
Basa are a species of freshwater catfish native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins of southeast Asia. They are in the family Pangasiidae, or shark catfishes.

Commercial Sources
Basa are raised in Vietnam. The U.S. is importing an increasing amount of basa, as a less expensive alternative to channel catfish.
Capture Methods
Most basa are grown in cages suspended under barges in the Mekong River. Basa are also grown in earthen ponds.

Basa imports from Vietnam, Thailand and China have increased substantially in recent years.
The fish are often cultivated in net cages in rivers, and there is little government regulation of farming operations

History
By 1995, the Vietnamese adopted a new breeding technology developed by a national university in collaboration with a French research institute. It improved productivity by reducing considerably the death rate of fingerlings. Moreover, fishers switched over from conventional to industrial feeds supplied by multinationals such as Cargill. By 1995, catfish production and exports rose exponentially.
From 1996, Vietnam began to export catfish to the US. Starting with a modest 98 tonnes in 1996, it reached 1,000 tonnes in 1998. By 2000, it hit 8,700 tonnes which rose further to 21,000 tonnes in 2002 — a staggering twenty-fold increase in four years! It accounted for 20 per cent of the US market and 40 per cent of Vietnam's exports. The size of the imports began to hurt the interests of fishers in the Mississippi Delta.

Culture practices
The catfish aquaculture industry in Vietnam presently consists of about 60% small-scale producers, typically
with ponds in the range of 2,000 m2 to several hectares. Catfish are typically grown in ponds around 4.5 m deep with a high level of water exchange on the order of 20-30% per day required to maintain the health of the stock and keep the flesh colour white; if exchange is insufficient the flesh takes on a yellow cast which is regarded as undesirable by processors

The basa fish, Pangasius bocourti, is a type of catfish in the family Pangasiidae. These fish are important food fish with an international market. They are often labelled in the United States as basa fish or bocourti. In Europe, these fish are commonly marketed as pangassius or panga. Other related shark catfish may occasionally be falsely labelled as basa fish, these fish include Pangasius hypophthalmus (iridescent shark) and Pangasius pangasius (yellowtail catfish).

According to the Ministry of Fisheries, the output of farmed tra and basa increased sharply in the first six months of the year, estimated at 400,000 tonnes, an increase of 100% over the same period of 2006.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries, tra and basa farming has developed to an uncontrollable rate with the farming density of 300-500 tonnes per hectare, which, as experts have warned, will have bad impacts on the environment

Basa is from the catfish family if that makes any difference to you. Aside from that, it is farmed, as are many species of fish. If that concerns you, then you should look for fish that are fresh and labeled "wild caught". Most fish these days have a certain amount of environmental contamination. The best thing to do is to eat a variety of things in moderation and avoid those fish that are known to be heavily contaminated.

Internationally, there's also been concern that traces of a chemical called malachite green have been found in basa. It's a green textile dye approved in pet shops for aquarium fish, but using it on aqua culture fish is illegal here, in the US, the UK, China and many other countries. It's been used as a fungicide but it's suspected of causing cancer and leaves behind a harmful residue called leuchomalachite.
It's a safety issue in Europe, safety issue in the US. but still Why not in Australia.

“Products from two Vietnamese processors are known to be contaminated with the antibiotics, therefore these products are
banned for sale in Mississippi,” Spell said. “We will continue to test for adulterated products from additional sources in Vietnam. I strongly urge consumers to stay away from basa fish products. Fish products from Vietnam are not guaranteed to be safe. Any products in Mississippi found to be contaminated will be seized.”

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries tested 13 samples of basa fish from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. Five of those samples tested positive for antibiotics. Those five samples came from Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

The state’s food safety director told reporters the presence of antibiotics in these fish in not accidental. He said they’re used to kill bacteria in the water.

افتراضي الباسا والترا مازالا مصدر ثمين لفيتنام

Viet Nam exported nearly 550 000 tonnes of tra and basa pangasius (commonly called pangasius) in the first ten months of 2008, for a value of USD 1.24 billion, says this FAO Globefish report.
FAO

Vietnamese pangasius still in a bonanza phase...
الباسا والترا مازالا مصدر ثمين لفيتنام
Pangasius exports increased by 53 %in value and 75 per cent in quantity over the same period of 2007. At these rates, pangasius recorded the highest growth rate of any aquaculture product exported by Viet Nam. The country is earning average revenue of USD 150 million from pangasius exports a month and total 2008 exports are expected to be USD 1.5 billion.

These forecasts should be reasonable, as new markets such as Russia, the Middle East and some Asian countries have demonstrated a growing demand for pangasius imported from Viet Nam. Russia is by far the main importing country of pangasius from Viet Nam, representing alone some 20 % of total exports. This country reported a 191 % growth in imports of pangasius from Viet Nam in the first ten months of 2008. Ukraine is second major outlet for Vietnamese pangasius, with 13 per cent of total imports. Ukraine imports of pangasius grew even stronger than the ones of Russia: from 20 000 tonnes in Jan-Oct 2007 to 70 000 tonnes in Jan-Oct 2008. Egypt also expanded as one of the main outlets for this commodity.

The EU is the main common market for pangasius from Viet Nam, with about one third of imports in both quantity and value terms. Spain is the biggest market, growing by 8 %. Demand for pangasius from the European market usually increases every year starting at the end of September.
... but there are some clouds on the bright sky

Despite this phenomenal growth rates, there is also some critics to be heard. On the one hand, the Vietnamese industry suffers from missing storage space. At present, Vietnamese traders have to sell at whatever price, so they are unable to wait for higher prices. In order to increase the present cold storage capacity to some 10 000 tonnes, 1.1-1.5 million EUR would be needed, difficult to mobilize in the present difficult financial situation. In addition to upgrading infrastructure, aquaculture companies have invested in widening their material areas. They signed contracts with local farmers to supply them with food and breeding fish to guarantee their supply.

Price cuts are to the expense of quality. Huge price competition result in an overuse of glazing and additives. This will result in declining quality and in the long in consumer dissatisfaction. As for all other major seafood items, importers will start to control more the quality offered, and establish good working relationships with trustworthy companies in Viet Nam. There will a shake out of the industry in the coming year.

The Vietnamese government animates pangasius producers to agree upon a floor price to avoid unfair competition, while ensuring hygienic practices. Recently, many aquaculture processing companies in the Cuu Long Delta have invested in upgrading their infrastructure and expanding their production.

Imports of pangasius are up 90 per cent into Germany in the first six months of 2008 compared to 2007. The species is being used in more ways by German companies, including the organic range as well as introducing some high-end smoked products. In October 2008, a consumer journal enquiry found several problems with pangasius products in German supermarkets. The impact of this study on German pangasius consumption has still to be seen.

The US catfish market is growing quite impressively. In the first nine months of 2008, some 37 000 tonnes were imported, 25 %more than in the same period of last year. Viet Nam accounts for about half of this quantity, while China reported strong increase in its catfish supplies to the US market, after the tough controls enforced last year. At present China accounts for about 27 % of total US catfish imports.
2009 year of change

Vietnamese pangasius producers have to improve their quality and their business practices, in order to maintain their markets in Europe. Overall, 2009 will be an important year for the industry, moving from a booming industry into a more mature phase. The occasional quality problems, as the ones listed by the German journal will lead to more consumer resistance. The low price alone will not be able to maintain the EU market.

افتراضي القرش القزحي الألوان

Iridescent shark
Despite its name, iridescent shark, Pangasius hypophthalmus is not a shark, but a catfish. This fish is also known as Siamese shark or sutchi catfish in the aquarium hobby or as tra, swai, or striped catfish in the food fish market, and occasionally incorrectly as basa and panga (though these names should be rather used for Pangasius bocourti and Pterogymnus laniarius, respectively). The species is found in Southeast Asia in the Mekong basin as well as the Chao Phraya river, and is heavily cultivated for food there. It has also been introduced into other river basins as a food source and is common in the fishkeeping hobby. It is named for its glow or iridescence exhibited in juveniles.

Their omnivorous diet consists of crustaceans, other fish, and plant matter.

The name ‘Basa’ is commonly used to refer to two species of fish that are native to the famous Mekong Delta river in Vietnam. Both Authentic Basa and Swai have exploded in popularity around the world, particularly in Europe where they are enjoyed as sustainable alternatives to declining wild stocks of cod, flounder, sole and haddock.

Farmers in southern Vietnam have been growing Basa and Swai using traditional methods for more than 30 years. Abundant natural waters provide an ideal growing environment, and stringent quality control guarantees consistency and quality. Authentic Basa is considered somewhat superior to Swai, with slightly thicker fillets and a finer texture. Both fish there are called by different names in various parts of the world, including Tra, Panga and Vietnamese Catfish (even though they’re not the same species as US catfish).

افتراضي Pangasius colors

Why are there different colors in Pangasius?

Pangasius is farmed in different conditions, in floating cages and farms on the river, in Quangs (fenced farms on the shores of the rivers) and ponds. In these conditions occur different feeding situations. So can the pond Pangasius find other feed next to what the fish gets through its pellets that the fish in the river. Feed situations change the meat color in the fish. Also water conditions can account for this – i.e. when the fish was harvested during the flood season in the Mekong when a lot of freshwater swells up the water flow in the Delta Rivers.

The second reason is slaughtering methods. Some fish is bled better, the other one not – some fish also have from their genetic situation other met conditions that result in different colors.

What Colors can be found in Pangasius

Pangasius is sorted after three different general colors: White, Pink and Yellow (sometimes also called “Cream” in the industry). But there are also far more sophisticated classifications are there are mixed sheds available inside of the three general colorings.

Here is the common classification more specified:

o Snow White
In some Markets this is the highest grade. The fish shows no coloration except a clear snowy white. These fish mostly come from high oxygen situations of strong floating currents and had been fully bled during slaughtering. The clear snow white fish can be mostly found in the waters of the River Hau in the An Giang Province in Vietnam

o White
The same accounts for the white sorting. This meat can sometimes have a slight ivory coloring. It always comes from good high oxygen water conditions and had fully bled during slaughtering.

o Light Pink
The light pink fish is often mistaken for white fish (also sometimes even wrong declared). Light pink as a pink shine on the fillet. This is probably, namely in Europe, one of the most attractive fillets as it looks fresh slaughtered in the fish counter through its little pinky shine. These fillets also are very much preferred and can reach the same price category as the white – sometimes higher. The Light Pink and Pink qualities can be found mostly in and about the River Tien in the Mekong Delta for there are lower oxygen levels in the water

o Pink
The Pink (sometimes even dark pink) fillets have a lower price than the three in the upper category. It is still very much preferred in southern European markets like Italy. The pink color occurs when the fish had been not bled fully or comes from pond conditions where the feed can color the meat alike. Mostly this fish gains about 10% lower price than the snow white offer.

o Light Yellow
Light yellow fish meat can be the result of pond breeding but also of different food conditions. It can be quite attractive – it mixes mostly white and light yellowish color. It is preferred in some Eastern European markets. It is mostly 15% lower in price than the snow white on top-. But it also depends on the amount available as light yellow started to gain some market access in the European supermarkets already.

o Yellow

In some Markets in Asia – like Singapore – this fish quality is sold as Cream Pangasius. This fish comes normally only from inland ponds with less aeration and low oxygen levels. This fish is graded about 20% lower than the white quality and it can occur that there is some off flavor (mud taste) found in the fish. This is only suitable for certain special customers

افتراضي PANGASIUS SITUATION, February/March 2009

PANGASIUS SITUATION, February/March 2009

According to Aquaculture department – Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), up to the end of the year 2008, Pangasius raising area in Mekong Delta decreased by 5,240 hectares compared to May of 2008, loosing 600 hectares. However, worrying problems besides the reason decreasing the farming area are some farmers breed with less quantity due to high price feed and some farmers were bankruptcy because of continuously decreasing price in 2008.

In some provinces which breeding Pangasius with high capacity like An Giang, Dong Thap, nearly 30% farmers stop breeding because of lacking capital and no product consuming contract were signed.

In 2008, the Pangasius export to Egypt market has remarked outstandingly with the development ratio of 324,6% on value, and 224,3% on the volume and overcome China and USA and ranked the 4th consumption market of Vietnam.

According to MARD, in 2008 Pangasius capacity were 1,128,000 tons, estimated capacity in 2009 is 1,200,000 tons. MARD Vice Minister Vu Van Tam warned more solutions such as finding lending capital, decreasing feed price…to prevent lacking of raw material for processing plants in Mekong Delta.
According to report on “Fresh Pangasius Fillet of year 2009” made by CafeF study group, in 2008 Vietnam exported more than 640 tons of various Pangasius, reached 1,453 billion US dollars, the growth rate kept remain 66% volume and 48% value.

The Pangasius export turn-over to Russia increased 142,5% on volume and double increased on the value, targeted 188 million US Dollars. The export to Ukraine increased 223% on the volume and 249% on the value.

The prices of raw material:

(Prices are including transportation cost from farms to factories)

* White meat fish: 15,500 – 15,000 Vietnam Dong per kilogram
*
Pink meat fish: 14,500 – 14,000 Vietnam Dong per kilogram
*
Yellow meat fish: 13,500 – 13,000 Vietnam Dong per kilogram

Pangasius juvenile situation:
