Rice straw as an alternative source of protein:
This study was conducted for the university of Luzon , Philippines , to determine the possibility of using yeast and rice straw compost as alternative sources of protein in tilapia feed.
This study was carried out in two phases:
In the first phase feed was prepared by meat grinder to make grains and feed tilapia in the ponds.
In the second phase, tilapia has been feeding in "certain cages" in the big pond.
In both experiments , fish fed to feed mixed with rice straw compost showed the highest growth rates.
The first phase:In the first phase , fingerlings of average weights of 1.5 grams were cultivated in well-fertilized ponds , for seven months , then fed to the experimental feed for three months .
The weights were as follows 141.3 gram , 134.6 gram and 106 gram for each of rice straw compost , yeast and control (without feeding) respectively.
Also , the ponds produced diffusion average weights of 124.3 , 101 , 57.2 kg for each of rice straw compost , yeast and control respectively.
The second phase:In the second phase , diffusion of average weights of 73.9 were cultivated in (cages) and after three months of feeding fish with experimental feed , the fish
grew to average weights of 162.6 , 155.6 , 148.8 , 146.6 ,for compost feed prepared by meat grinder , compost feed prepared by pellet mill , yeast feed prepared by meat grinder and yeast feed prepared by pellet mill respectively.
Based on these results , it is clear that these low-cost materials can increase the productivity of fish farming in Egypt. Rice straw compost is the best of all these alternatives.
This study is very important for us in Egypt , as we import virtually all the components of fish feed , and with this continous rise in prices fish farming industry may face great problems that will lead to increase fish prices , which are considered as the cheapset animal protein in Egypt , and also this will force us to import more fish .
Rice straw has no price here in Egypt , but it even pollutes the environment . All what we need is to make our minds work with little innovation.
